Before a Green Edventures trip even begins, there is something our travelers tell us they love: Our packing lists.
We put a lot of thought into them because packing for a women’s adventure trip isn’t about bringing everything you might possibly need. It’s about bringing the right things for where you’re going, what you’ll be doing, and the conditions you may encounter.
Years of leading women’s adventure tours around the world have taught us what works, what doesn’t, and what actually matters. They’ve also given us a few favorite sayings.
“Do I Really Need a Duffle Bag?” Yes!!
This may be the number one packing question we get. Do I really need a duffle bag? Yes!!
If the packing list says duffle bag, there is a reason. On many of our adventures, luggage is being loaded into vans, boats, small aircraft, trailers, or other places where a large rigid suitcase simply doesn’t work well.
Sometimes we move luggage frequently. Sometimes space is limited. Sometimes someone has to physically pick up and move every single bag. A soft-sided duffle is flexible, easier to maneuver, and much better suited to adventure travel. So, when the packing list says duffle bag, trust us on this one. Bring the duffle bag.
“If Your Pants Don’t Fit Now, They Will Not Fit on the Tour.”
Those pants you’re hoping will fit better by departure day? Leave them home. If something feels too tight, rubs, restricts your movement, or annoys you at home, imagine how it will feel several hours into a hike.
Pack clothing that fits your body right now and lets you move comfortably. Adventure travel is not the place to battle your waistband.
“You Will Wear the Same Clothes Over and Over Again.”
Yes, you really will. The hiking pants will make another appearance. So will your fleece. And there’s a good chance you’ll keep reaching for the same comfortable shirt. That’s not poor packing. That’s smart adventure packing.
For most women’s adventure travel, a few versatile pieces that work together and layer well are far more useful than bringing a different outfit for every day. Pack less. Rewear your clothes. Nobody on the trail is keeping score.
A Packing List Should Match the Adventure
Packing for hiking in Iceland isn’t the same as packing for kayaking in Alaska, snorkeling in the Galápagos, trekking in Greenland, or going on safari in Africa.
That’s why we don’t hand every traveler the same generic travel checklist. Each Green Edventures packing list considers the destination, season, planned activities, expected weather, and safety requirements for that particular trip.
We help you sort through the questions that inevitably come up. Do you really need hiking boots, or are trail shoes appropriate? What kind of rain jacket should you bring? Are waterproof pants necessary? How big should your daypack be? What gear is provided? And yes—do you really need the duffle bag? If it’s on the list, the answer is yes.
The goal isn’t to prepare you for every imaginable scenario. It’s to prepare you for the adventure you’re actually taking.
“You Have Survived Your Entire Life Without Me.”
Our founder, Tara, occasionally has to remind travelers—and herself—of this one:
You have survived your entire life without me. You’ve raised children, built careers, run businesses and figured out plenty of complicated things along the way. You can pack a duffle bag.
A Green Edventures packing list isn’t supposed to make capable women suddenly doubt their ability to choose a pair of socks. It’s our way of passing along what experience has taught us.
Our recommendations are based on personal experience, safety considerations, and years of traveling in the destinations we visit. There’s also one sentence we hope you never have to utter once you’re there: “I wish I would have known.”
There Is a Reason Behind the Recommendations
When we tell you waterproof pants matter on one trip but aren’t necessary on another, there’s a reason. The same goes for footwear, layers, daypacks, duffle bags, and the things we tell you not to bother bringing.
We’ve experienced the weather. We’ve walked the trails. We’ve done the activities. We’ve watched certain gear perform beautifully—and we’ve seen what doesn’t work. Explaining the why helps you make sensible decisions about what you already have, what you might borrow, and what is actually worth buying.
Outdoor Expertise Is Not a Prerequisite
Some Green Edventures travelers already own enough outdoor gear to outfit a small expedition. Others walk into an outdoor store, see 47 different rain jackets, and have no idea where to begin. Both belong on our women’s adventures.
You don’t need to become a gear expert before your trip, and you don’t need to replace your entire wardrobe with expensive technical clothing. We’ll help you understand what matters.
Sometimes a technical piece of gear really is important. Sometimes something already hanging in your closet will work perfectly well. And sometimes we’ll tell you to save your money and leave an item at home.
Being Prepared Gives You Confidence
The value of packing well goes beyond staying warm and dry. Preparation builds confidence. When the wind comes up, you know where your rain gear is. When the temperature drops, you know which layer to put on. When you’re about to try an activity, you’ve never done before, you’re not distracted by wondering whether you brought the right equipment. You’re ready to participate. And that means your attention can be on the reason you traveled in the first place: the experience.
Your First Women’s Adventure Is Welcome Here
Some women join Green Edventures with years of hiking and adventure travel behind them. Others are joining their first organized women’s adventure tour or trying hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, or glacier walking for the first time. Many come on their own. You aren’t expected to arrive already knowing everything.
That’s part of what good leadership is for. Leadership begins before the group meets. Our packing lists, pre-trip information, and guidance help you understand what to expect and arrive ready for what you’re about to do. You bring the willingness to try. We’ll help you figure out what belongs in your duffle bag.
Pack for the Trip You’re Actually Taking
Our packing lists aren’t about telling capable women how to pack. They’re about giving you the benefit of years of firsthand experience so you can bring what matters, skip what doesn’t, and start your women’s adventure feeling prepared.
-
- Trust the list.
- Ask us when you’re unsure.
- Bring the pants that fit.
- And if the list says duffle bag, bring the duffle bag.
Above all, we want you to arrive ready for your adventure without ever having to think: “I wish I would have known.”
