Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Iceland - Explore Reykjavik

Iceland-day-1

Upon arrival at Keflavik Airport, make your way to Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city. Spend the day exploring its colorful streets, unique boutiques, and renowned museums like the National Museum or the quirky Icelandic Phallological Museum. Stroll along the waterfront to see the Sun Voyager sculpture or Hallgrímskirkja church, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.
In the evening, we gather for a pre-hike meeting to go over trip details and prepare for our adventure. This is your chance to meet your fellow hikers and ask any questions about the journey ahead. Enjoy a welcome dinner in one of Reykjavik’s cozy restaurants.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: 3-Star Hotel in Reykjavik (Hote Leifur Eiriksson or similar)

Day 2: Journey to Landmannalaugar – Geothermal Marvels and Rhyolite Mountains

Iceland-Laugavegur-hikers

Our adventure begins with a scenic superbus ride deep into the Highlands, crossing dramatic landscapes shaped by volcanic forces. Pass bubbling hot springs, lava fields, and the infamous Mount Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. The offroad adventure requires the superbus to traverse gravel roads and cross a couple of glacier rivers to get to the Landmannalauger.

Arriving at Landmannalaugar, we enjoy lunch before starting our trek. Bring your bathing suit and soak in hot spring before we head off on the trek. The trail begins with a surreal landscape of black lava flows and brightly colored rhyolite hills. We climb steadily past steaming sulfur vents, marveling at the geothermal activity that heats the hot springs below. As we ascend, the views grow more spectacular, revealing the vast wilderness of Fjallabak Nature Reserve.

As we ascend a little higher, the colorful landscape turns black and white. The terrain levels out and we hike across obsidian fields and snowy trails. We will reach our first mountain hut by late afternoon.

Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles) | Active Walking Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain: 470 m (1,540 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut

Day 3: Canyon Wonders to Álftavatn – Beautiful Swan Lake

Laugavegur-iceland-mountains

Today’s trek is a feast for the senses. We descend into the canyon systems south of Hrafntinnusker, weaving through steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and patches of lingering snow. The dramatic contrasts of black volcanic sand and vibrant green moss create a striking landscape.

As we navigate the Jökultungur (glacier tongue) ridges, breathtaking views of the volcanic plains and distant glaciers unfold. Descending toward Álftavatn (Swan Lake), the serene beauty of this remote glacial lake welcomes us. Surrounded by rugged green mountains, it’s one of the most picturesque spots on the trail. We settle into the mountain hut by the lake for the night. For those who are up for it, you can swim in the cool mountain lake under the midnight sun.

Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles) | Active Walking Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Loss: 490 m (1,610 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Álftavatn Mountain Hut

Day 4: Glacial Rivers and Black Sand Deserts to Emstrur

Iceland-Laugavegur--Incredible-view

Prepare for a day of contrasts as we traverse glacial streams and rivers (some forded on foot). The hike leads us through the lush oasis of Hvanngil, a green respite amidst the stark highlands.

Crossing the expansive black sand desert of Mælifellssandur, we pass the striking cone-shaped green peak of Stórasúla volcano. The trail continues toward Hattfell, an ancient volcano, before arriving at Emstrur. A detour takes us to the dramatic Markarfljót Canyon, carved by powerful glacial floods and plunging nearly 200 meters (656 feet) into the earth.

Distance: 16 km (10 miles) | Active Walking Time: 6-7 hours | Elevation Loss: 40 m (130 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Botnar Mountain Hut

Day 5: Þórsmörk – Into Thor’s Valley

Iceland-Thors-valley

Today’s trek takes us through one of Iceland’s most iconic landscapes. We cross two rivers, hike along the edge of Markarfljót Canyon, and descend into the lush, green valley of Þórsmörk, named after the Norse god Thor.

For the first time, the trail is surrounded by fairytale vegetation, including birch forests and delicate arctic flowers. The beauty intensifies as we approach the heart of Þórsmörk, with its glacier-capped peaks and fast-flowing rivers creating a natural amphitheater. After arriving at the mountain hut, we enjoy an evening of celebration and reflection on our incredible journey together in the highlands.

Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles) | Active Walking Time: 6-7 hours | Elevation Loss: 300 m (985 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Þórsmörk Mountain Hut

Day 6: Morning at Þórsmörk - Return to Reykjavik.

Iceland-Laugavegur-womens-hiking-Tour-Group

Spend the morning exploring Þórsmörk at your own pace. Hike to the Valahnjúkur viewpoint for sweeping vistas of the surrounding glaciers or visit the mysterious Sönghellir (Song Cave), where echoes create a haunting melody.

After lunch, we board the bus back to Reykjavik, arriving in the evening. Take some time to relax before we gather for a final dinner to share memories and toast to an unforgettable adventure.

Distance: 5-10 km (3-6 miles) | Active Walking Time: 2-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight: 3-Star Hotel in Reykjavik (Hotel Leifur Eiriksson or similar)

Day 7: Icelandic Bathing Culture Experience at Sky Lagoon

Iceland-sky-lagoon-goodbyes

Before concluding your Icelandic adventure, immerse yourself in the spirit of Viking bathing culture at the Sky Lagoon. This luxurious spa embodies ancient Nordic traditions, offering a seven-step ritual inspired by Iceland’s bathing heritage. Begin with a refreshing cold plunge, invigorating the body as Vikings once did, before moving through warm pools, a rejuvenating sauna, and the tranquil infinity lagoon overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean.

The experience connects you to the natural elements that shaped the lives of Viking settlers, providing a moment of reflection on your journey along their historic paths. Afterward, we transfer to Keflavik Airport for your return flight, bringing home memories of an epic expedition through Viking trails and Iceland’s untamed wilderness.

What our adventurers say about the Iceland Women’s Laugavegur Hike

  • Avatar Fran Poodry
I have been on two trips with Green Edventures and both have been awesome! The first was a through hike in Iceland, the Laugavegur trail; and the second was the Iceland Knitting and Northern Lights tour. The … More knitting tour finished just over a week ago. I met awesome women who were also on the tour, and I also got to meet some awesome Icelandic women. We had time for knitting, time for viewing the northern lights, and excursions. The excursions included visiting people on their farms and in their homes and workshops to learn about sheep, goats, wool, and yarn.Green Edventures did a great job making sure we had fun things to do and an excellent knitting experience. Somehow they also contrived to have perfect clear nights for aurora-watching! The sky was amazing!I plan to make time for more Green Edventures tours in the future!

I had the greatest experience with Green Edventures and the owner/tour leader, Tara Short. I traveled with GE this past summer to Iceland on a 5 day trek through the Laugavegur Trail (plus pre-tour). … More The trip was exceptionally well planned. Months in advance of the trip, we were given a detailed trip guide and list of suggested items to bring on the trek. We had a zoom conference before the trip to meet all the participants and ask questions about the tour. We were all so well prepared for the trek! Tara is an amazing person and wonderful trip leader. Iceland was spectacular, but what made this trip so special and unique was Tara and the group of ladies participating on the trek - we had so much fun together! Now looking forward to the next adventure with GE and Tara!

After hiking the Laugavegur trail with Green Edventures last year, Tara agreed to organize the same hike for women 60+ in 2023. I loved it so much at age 70 that I decided to come back at age 71 and I … More don't regret one step! If you are in decent shape, good health, enjoy hiking across diverse and unbelievably beautiful terrain, don't ,miss out on this trek in 2024. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you over an over again!

Iceland is incredible! I was able to do the Laugavegur Trail and Multi - Sport trips back to back. I highly recommend either (or both)! Green Edventures takes out all the guesswork of travel planning, … More and allows for complete confidence when traveling solo. I’ve made fast friends on these and past trips! Can’t wait for my next one

F.A.Q.

I have more questions. Who can I talk to?

Call or email us! A real person will answer the phone (or call you back).
(888) 622-4911
info@3.17.200.177

What is the average age of the participants?

The average age range of hikers is 45-55 years. Our groups tend to be multi-generational, so there may be participants ranging from their 30s to their 70s. This trip is open to any woman who is healthy, active, and resonates with the itinerary.

Do women travel solo or with friends?

Both! There is usually a 60/40 split between solo travelers and those traveling with friends. By day 3, we all become good friends, and it’s hard to tell who is solo and who isn’t.

I am a solo traveler. Do I get charged more for a single room?

No. Solo travelers are paired with other solo travelers. There are no forced single supplements. This tour does not have single room upgrade available during the trek because we stay in mountain huts with limited beds. You may be able to upgrade to a single room at the hotel pre/post trek.

Do I need any vaccinations?

None are required, currently.

What happens after I sign up?

You will receive an automatic email confirmation indicating your deposit was received. Within 24-48 hours, someone from Green Edventures will follow up with a personal email welcoming you to the trip! We are excited to meet you.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! Pay a small deposit to secure your spot. Then, pay the balance in interest-free installments using a credit card or checking account. There is no bank transaction fees when you use your checking account. If you want the convenience of using a credit card, the bank will charge 3%. You can switch between two payment options at any time.

What is the cutoff date to confirm the trip?

The trip will need critical mass within 90 days of departure. In the unlikely event we don’t reach this minimum, a full refund will be issued.

Is airfare included in the price?

The package price covers land fees only. Participants need to book their own flights to Iceland. We can offer guidance, and once we have confirmed the tour, we will provide travel parameters for booking your flight.

How do I arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel?

It’s easy peasy to get from the airport to the rendezvous hotel in Reykjavik. The cost is about $35 USD. Details will be provided to you in the travel parameters.

What do we eat on the tour?

All food is pre-purchased in Reykjavik, with the emphasis on fresh produce and easily-prepared meals. The huts are equipped with gas stoves, kitchen utensils and running cold water. Your guide will prepare the group’s evening meals and will be very grateful for any assistance from group members. Local specialties predominate, including excellent sea-fish, Icelandic lamb and salmon. Breakfasts will consist of porridge, muesli, bread, jam, cheese, ham, plus tea and coffee. At breakfast, snack items and sandwich materials will be made available so that group members can make up their own packed lunches. All meals and snacks while on trek are included in the tour price. A sample menu is towards the end of this document.

Water bottles can be filled in the huts and in rivers along the trek. The water is very good and safe to drink. There are no actual shops and few possibilities to buy refreshments, snacks or drinks during the trek. In Álftavatn, the second hut, the hut wardens sell a few necessities and recently there was opened a small highland restaurant in the area. On the last night in Thorsmork (Þórsmörk) you will find a small shop for beverages and snacks.

You will want to bring your favorite energy snacks and beverage mixes along for the trail. You can shop in Reykjavik for local items.

Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, no-fish, gluten-free, dairy-free can be accommodated. If you have severe restrictions please contact us to discuss.

Where do we stay?

In Reykjavik (2 nights)
We stay in a 3-star hotel in downtown for easy walkability to shops, museums, and restaurants.

Laugavegur Trail (4 nights)
During the trek the accommodation will be in simple, heated, mountain huts in dormitories with single and double bunk beds or mattresses. Several of the huts are in places only accessible by foot and are surrounded by beautiful scenery including lakes, glaciers, mountains, and volcanoes. The Laugavegur trail is a popular trail in Iceland and indoor accommodations are extremely limited. The room in the huts is limited and provides hikers with the basics like a warm place to sleep, eat, and socialize out of the elements.

Beds are simple. Participants will have to share double mattresses in close quarters. The rooms accommodate 10-20 participants and we have reservations at each hut.

The beds are basically mats on bed frames. You bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. It is a lot like camping in a tent next to someone. If our group does not fill a room, other travelers (men and women) will stay in the same room with our group and possibly in the bed right next to you. If there are too many of us for one room, some participants may need to share a different room with another group. We do our best to keep everyone together, but it is ultimately the decision of the wardens.

Depending on the hut….

you could be in a bunk bed with a double mat on the bottom sharing with another person, and a single mat on top.
You could be on a mat on a long row of 6 single mats with enough room for your duffle, sleeping bag, and room to sleep for 6 people.
You could be in a bunk bed that has 4 single side-by-side sleeping spots on top (4 spots) and 4 single sleeping spots below.- 4 people on the top, 4 people on the bottom.
You could be in a bunk that has one single sleeping spot on top and bottom

Do I need to be in shape to join this adventure?

The hike is moderate to strenuous, especially the first two days. All participants must commit to preparing themselves for this hike. Please do not show up having done no previous conditioning, hoping to wing it with will alone. You owe it to yourself to get your body strong for this event. It will be more enjoyable for you and your fellow hikers. Training should include cardiovascular (biking, running, swimming), and weights (squats), and hiking (distance and hills).

Expect to walk 6-7 hours per day, or about 7-10 miles per day over 5 days..

The first day we ascend about 3,000ft then the next day the elevation stays steady until a down, then an up about another 400ft. The max elevation in height is about 3400ft. Then we descended to Lake Alftavatn. The third day we will descend more over rolling hills. By day 4 it’s pretty much flat. There is a cumulative elevation of about 6,000ft after 5 days of hiking because of the rolling terrain.

Have you heard of Relive? It’s an app. It syncs videos and photos taken and GPS tracker to make a topographic video of the activity. The trip leader in 2021 used this app for all 5 days on the hike last July. Click on the links and play the video to get a better idea of the experience. In the top left of the video there is the elevation profile.

Day 1: https://www.relive.cc/view/v8qVpMZdm3O
Day 2: https://www.relive.cc/view/vMq5WBMjEQO
Day 3: https://www.relive.cc/view/vPOpdWdwARO
Day 4: https://www.relive.cc/view/vrqDdmd8wwq
Day 5: https://www.relive.cc/view/v8qVp1pRz3O

Do need previous experience?

Some experience carrying a backpack in mountain terrain is recommended and a willingness to prepare your body for the adventure. Give us a call and we are happy to discuss the hike with you to make sure it is a right fit.

How do I pack for Laugavegur Trek?

You only need personal gear. All equipment is provided. Important items include waterproof, lightweight, breathable rain gear, backpack, sturdy waterproof hiking boots, wool / smartwool base layers, and trekking poles.

Here is a link to the packing list.

What will the weather be like?

Iceland’s weather is not to be underestimated, especially in the highlands. Delightful days can become dangerous without warning. Plan for wind, soaking rain and possible snow. If that happens, we will pat ourselves on the backs and congratulate each other about how prepared we were.  If we have blue skies, and 5 solid days of sunshine in t-shirts, you all can look at your guide like she was crazy to have ever suggested anything otherwise. –  Both scenarios are possible for the entire duration of the hike, or mixed throughout.

Temperatures will likely be in the 40s but can drop below 30s in the highlands with rain, sleet, and snow. There can be soaking rain and high winds. On the other end of the spectrum, the average high is mid 60s to mid 70s.

On the very best days, It will be windy.

What type of transportation is use on this tour?

The  group will travel in a 15-passenger van with four rows of bench seating. Participants’ luggage and trip supplies are transported on the roof of the vehicle and covered with a tarp. Space is limited for personal items. Please follow the luggage guidelines.

Should I get travel insurance?

Yes, we recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect you and your investment.
You can get more information and purchase travel insurance here:
